19thc Victorian Doctor Medical Office Cabinet Photos Iowa

30 May

A woman sits at a desk with a candlestick phone and eye chart behind her, a man relaxes on a wooden examination table built around a washstand base.  There is a blood or wash basin, a great little table full of examination or maybe surgical tools. Labeled Waiting Room and Operating Room in fountain pen.

Identified as Eagle Grove in pencil.   Cabinet cards measure 5 1/2″ x 6 1/2″. $45.

Wooden  handle, tin/wire bent into the shape of an iron cross.  A campfire sandwich toaster, WWI trench art?  Complete anomaly. $35.

Circus Carnival Street Huckster RPPC Boy w/ Trained Black Bear Cub

08 Mar

I love this card.  The man bends down to feed a black bear cub who stands on his hind legs with a tiny chain leash attached.  The back reads “This cub is our new mascot and he certainly is a good one.  The crowds are beginning to gather and the day is fair.” Bethel, ME. $35.

c1900 Galvanized Tin & Copper Chill Chest Casket Coffin Transport RARE

14 Nov
Found in a 19thc funeral home here in Western PA, an exceptionally rare chill chest – likely to transport a body across the rails back home.  Galvanized tin coffin, with copper overlay on the lid.  Thumb tightened screw locks every few inches held the lid in place.  Likely c1900, maybe a touch earlier.  There is period writing on the lid that while very hard to make out clearly reads “prepaid” and “return to” among other words. Important study piece to the timeline of the early funeral industry.  Measures 78″ x 22″ x 11″.  Missing one thumbscrew mechanism. $295.

Entirely made of wood – nice age. $135.

Victorian MOP Sterling Parasol Handle Halloween Gothic

01 Mar

Beautiful piece from the late Victorian era (c1890-1900), 7 1/2″ mother of pearl with sterling silver mount and handle.  Decorated with extremely unusual halloween motif.  On the “front” the outline of a spider’s web creates a shield (that is engraved with unreadable initials) and two spiders.  The reverse shows a folky spider web with three circling it.  Marked Sterling.  The parasol handle has long been separated from any parasol.  There is a bit of damage to one corner where the handle has been dropped and the silver has crumpled.  Damage does not show when the piece is displayed flat.  $195.

c1920 American Missionary to India Archive

19 Oct

Nine pieces in total, pictured first with detail pics following.  Two specific female bookmarks on heavy cardstock (2″ x 6″,) one postcard sized print of a Cleveland family in China (friends I’m sure) and another printed card (slightly larger) from India as well; four photos including a rppc taken in India, a snapshot (3″ x 5″) of the family proper taken in India (reverse reads “pray for us in India) and two smaller snapshots (2 1/2″ x 4″) that seem to have been taken in Florida – one of a pair of (Seminole?) Indian boys, and the other of a camp cook which reads “our camp cook only has one leg.”  Its a remarkable little archive of early 20thc missionary work, as these were sent home to a family local to me (envelope is included with Indian postage and mailing address) and kept since.  Everything is in nice condition, with slight expected wear.  $60.

c1920′s Arts & Crafts Jules Michelet Witch Sorciere

26 Mar

This is a beautiful (most undoubtedly french) illustration that appears to be arts and crafts era of the Sorceress of Michelet’s La Sorciere.  The book was first published in 1862 and is a romantic version of witchs’ history and delves a bit into witchcraft/satanism.  Important book, important image. Measures 5 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ with a missing left corner and a tear to the top margin, entirely able to be matted out when framed.  No image is lost.   $35.
